The boys joined AWANA (Approved Workers are not Ashamed) with some friends last year. The best part about this church-based club is that they make it fun to learn God's word and the kids are hiding the word of God in their hearts while having the time of their lives! The Pinewood Derby was no exception. The boys picked out their favorite cars and then painted them and prepared them for race day. Tanner chose a pick-up truck (which we later learned is probably not the most aerodynamic automobile) and Evan chose a classic car. Both boys painted, and re-painted, and painted again until their cars were perfect.
And there were only a few minor setbacks with this little adventure. One...boys are serious about their cars and DO NOT take losses lightly...not even if Pastor Jack says it's not about the trophy and we are all just there to have fun....
Two....when preparing your car for the big race, be sure that none of the metal weights accidentally get washed down your garbage disposal because this will immediately cease function of said disposal and make a very loud jet engine type noise when you try to use it. It will also cost you $110 in electrician fees for the 8 minutes it took him to find the weights in our disposal.....
Three...your seven year old son will get mad...VERY mad...when his wheels fall off his truck on the final qualifying race, making it an obvious DISqualification...and he will shamelessly blame the person who put them on....I'm just sayin'......
It really was fun and we are looking forward to it next year!
